Course Description
Course Description: Foundations of Healthcare Professions is an introductory course designed to provide students with an overview of the career clusters in the many different fields of health care. During this first course, students are introduced to healthcare history, careers, laws and ethics, cultural diversity, healthcare language and math, infection control, professionalism, communication, organization basics of healthcare facilities, different types of health insurance and career exploration. Students get a good grasp of where healthcare has been, where it is going and how professionalism and personal characteristics affect their success. Students will be introduced to “Standard Precautions” and learn about confidentiality through HIPPA. As students are guided through healthcare career exploration, they will discuss education levels and requirements needed to be successful. The skills and knowledge that students learn in Health Science 1 serve to prepare the student for future clinical experiences, such as job shadowing, as they advance in the Health Science courses.
General Requirements – This course is designed for students in grades 10-12. Students must have completed Biology 1 or be enrolled concurrently in Biology 1 to take this course.
